Is Your Human Capital Management Process a ‘Frankenstein’?

Have you created a Frankenstein-like human capital management (HCM) system? In other words, is the system you use to manage your workforce data made up of several separate systems that (try to) work as one entire system? For example, maybe you have an applicant tracking system to manage your job candidates, another system for tracking time and attendance, and yet another to do payroll. While you’ve managed to make it work (for now), you could be doing yourself a disservice when you use multiple systems that aren’t integrated with one another.

Consider the disadvantages of a Frankenstein HCM system:

It slows down your process. Having separate systems to manage can mean logging in and entering the same information multiple times, which can be time-consuming and tedious – not to mention frustrating. It also hinders your ability to retrieve information you need to get to quickly. On the other hand, when you have a system where everything is integrated, it’s easier to find the information you need faster.

It causes inconsistency. With more need to enter (and re-enter) information manually, there’s a higher possibility of human error. When you have multiple systems that require manual data entry, you’re more likely to come across mistakes like duplicate data, missing information and incorrect information on file.

It makes reporting difficult. When your systems aren’t connected, it can be more difficult and time-consuming to find the data you need to run reports. And if there are inconsistencies in the data (see above), it’s even harder to ensure accuracy in the reporting. On the other hand, having a single system to house all of your data makes it easier to get the data you need, run reports and compare information.

It’s an IT nightmare. From a tech support standpoint, it’s much easier to support a singular, integrated system than several smaller, disjointed systems. Trying to manage multiple systems can be a drain on your tech team’s time and resources.

It makes you less effective. Simply put, the more time you spend trying to navigate multiple systems, the less time and energy you have to devote to other areas of your job, like employee engagement or workforce planning.

In today’s fast-paced world, HCM technology is essential for keeping up with a constantly evolving workforce environment. Investing in truly integrated HCM technology can mitigate some of the challenges and frustrations you find with your current process.
