2018 New Year's Resolutions for Your Small Business

When it comes to starting the new year, many of us see it as a chance to start again, and that mentality applies to our business, too. When considering what resolutions to make for your small business this, consider the challenges you faced in 2017, and ask yourself how you can turn them into opportunities in 2018. Below are a five suggested resolutions to help make 2018 the best year ever for your small business.  


Help your employees help the business

Make innovation a priority in 2018. Your employees are a minefield of new and different business ideas. How often do you solicit new business ideas from your employees? Encourage employees to submit new, creative business ideas. Set up a suggestion box to review monthly and hand out awards for the best new ideas, host off-site team brainstorming sessions, or hold a contest for the best new business idea. Employees may be less likely to voice their ideas for fear of rejection, so make it clear there are no bad ideas and all ideas are appreciated. You never know when someone will submit a game-changer.


Embrace automation

CareerBuilder research finds that nearly one third of small business owners (31 percent) spend 10 or more hours each week manually completing tasks that could be automated, while 1 in 5 (19 percent) estimate spend 15 hours or more. Using HR technology to automate various human capital management tasks has been shown to save small businesses time and money, and increase business value.


Give back

Small business employers who give back to the community tend to see benefits to their businesses as well. Not only does volunteering and charitable giving help to foster a sense of community and collaboration among your workers, it gives them a sense of purpose, which increases morale and helps with retention. Creating a culture of philanthropy could also give you a competitive edge when it comes to attracting millennials - as both employees and customers. Consider organizing food or clothing drives, sponsoring a fun run, or putting together a company-wide volunteer day, to name a few.
