Humana Brings Military Veterans Back to Work

Client: Humana
Industry: Healthcare
Company Size: 200-500

“We understand that this is a special demographic, known for building strong communities amongst each other. Finding a way to build a strong community for the purpose of communicating with and recruiting veterans and military spouses was critical. Talent Network gives us those capabilities. This is their place to learn more about us, and us about them.”

-        Kevin Stakelum, Director of Talent Acquisition, Humana

Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Humana Inc. is a leading healthcare company that offers a wide range of insurance products to meet almost any type of health care need, along with award-winning health and wellness services that support and promote lifelong well-being. Humana is not your typical insurance provider—they work to empower its members to make health care decisions that help them live healthy, active and rewarding lives.

In August 2011, following President Obama’s nationwide call for businesses to hire more veterans, Humana pledged to hire 1,000 military veterans and/or their spouses over a three-year period. While Humana saw the pledge as a way to honor servicemen and women and their families for the sacrifices they’ve made for our country, they knew it would benefit the quality of their business as well: Humana already had a rich history of hiring military veterans and knew the value their unique skills brought to the company.

Because veterans are not used to the civilian workforce and typical job search process, Humana knew it needed a slightly different approach to reach and recruit veterans and military spouses. Humana turned to CareerBuilder, who helped implement a veterans-focused version of its Talent Network solution. With Talent Network, veterans and their spouses could easily find and apply to available job opportunities and join Humana’s talent network to learn about future opportunities. With Talent Network, Humana could easily capture candidate data, match candidates with opportunities that fit their skills and experience, and automatically re-engage candidates over time.

Within months of implementing Talent Network, Humana began seeing results, and in just a year – two years ahead of schedule – Humana reached its goal of hiring 1,000 veterans. And within five months of implementing, Humana had 5,600 members in its network.
